WE ARE SO EXCITED. WE JUST FOUND OUT TODAY, WE HAD OUR SUSPICIONS FOR AWHILE NOW, BUT TODAY WE CONFIRMED IT.
HERE'S OUR FIRST PICTURE. COUNT THEM....... ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR!
THIS IS THE MOMMY OR DADDY BIRD, NOT SURE BECAUSE BOTH LOOK THE SAME. THEY ARE CALLED A KILLDEER BIRD, THEY LIKE TO NEST ON THE GROUND IN OPEN FIELDS, AND THEY LOVE GRAVEL AND ROCKS, WHICH IS WHERE THEY LAID THESE EGGS, OUT IN OUR BACK YARD OUT IN THE OPEN IN SOME ROCKS. THE EGGS ARE ABOUT A 1" OR SO LONG, IT WILL TAKE ABOUT 22 TO 30 DAYS TO HATCH, WE AREN'T SURE HOW LONG THEY HAVE BEEN OUT THERE, BUT WE BELIEVE THEY MUST BE GETTING FAIRLY CLOSE. FROM WHAT WE HAVE READ ABOUT THEM THE BABIES ARE STRONG ENOUGH AS SOON AS THEY ARE DRY TO LEAVE THE NEST, SO WE AREN'T SURE IF WE WILL GET TO SEE THEM HATCH OR BEFORE THEY LEAVE THE NEST, SINCE WE WON'T BE HOME MUCH NEXT WEEK TO KEEP A DAILY EYE ON THEM. HOPEFULLY WE WILL BE ABLE TO GET SOME PICTURES, IF SO WE WILL POST THEM FOR EVERYONE TO STAY UPDATED ON OUR BABIES. UNTIL THEN, WE ARE GLAD TO SHARE OUR HOME WITH THEM.
THESE BIRDS ARE ABOUT 11". THEY HAVE FAIRLY LONG LEGS AND A VERY LOUD CRY. WE ALSO GOT TO SEE THEM PULL THEIR "Broken-wing distraction" They use this to move predators away from their nest or chicks. An Adult bird flops on the ground and drags it's wings and tail to show the white wing patches and orange rump, acting hurt and unable to fly. The adult moves gradually away from the nest, luring the predator. Once far enough away, it will fly away from the predator and return to near the nest.
SURPRISE!!!!!
I WENT OUT TO CHECK ON THEM TODAY BEFORE WE HEADED INTO VEGAS, AND TO MY SURPRISE, TWO OF THEM HAD HATCHED. I WAS SO EXCITED I RAN BACK IN TO GRAB MY CAMERA AND GET A PICTURE BEFORE WE HAD TO LEAVE. THEY ARE SO CUTE!

That's so cool!!! We wish we had bird eggs to watch them hatch. That looks like a big bird, is it a big bird?
love you,
Blaise
HI BUDDY, YEAH IT'S PRETTY BIG, ABOUT LIKE THE SIZE OF A RULER, FROM IT'S BEAK TO IT'S TAIL. IT HAS FAILY LONG LEGS TOO. THEY MADE THEIR NEST ON THE GROUND BACK IN THE YARD WHERE WE RIDE THE GO CART. WE FOUND OUT SOME FACTS ABOUT THIS BIRD SO WE ADDED IT TO THE BLOG. IF WE GET SOME PICTURES OF THE BABIES WE WILL POST THEM SO YOU CAN SEE THEM TOO.
LOVE YOU,
BAMA
How cool is that! And even cooler that you actually got to see the babies when they hatched! Had to love the way Nick yells out to me "Hey my mom's pregnant" when he was reading the blog. lol cute little baby birds! : )
I have to admit that I was a little bummed at first to find out you were talking about birds. I was so excited to have a new little brother or sister (and I know dad would have been ECSTATIC!). =) But you can't help but be happy after seeing the cute pictures of the little baby birds. The eggs look really big. What a neat little thing for you guys to be able to watch.
I'm so glad we checked in today before I took Blaise to school! He is very jealous. He said, "lets go looking for bird nests after school."
